Still, +1 for pay yourself first. That also works nicely for creating an artificial scarcity, which for some people is a good substitute for a formal budget. I have tried more formal budgeting methods several times but it just doesn't work very well for me; however, setting aside a significant fraction of my take-home pay every month and being diligent about not withdrawing from savings works very well for me.
