Oct 31, 2010 at 21:00 comment added E.J. Brennan The article is baloney, no way a bank is going to open a safe-deposit-box and confiscate the contents because of a "financial event". Turn over the contents to the FBI/CIA as part of a terror investigation? maybe.
Oct 23, 2010 at 17:56 comment added Eclipse @mbhunter, do you have any reputable sources of such a confiscation? I can't find much outside of people selling something.
Oct 23, 2010 at 16:20 comment added mbhunter @Eclipse, perhaps, but it's not exactly the same situation. Forced reimbursement (FDR-style) is one thing. Confiscation is entirely different. There is no reimbursement. Under normal circumstances, things are better protected in a safe-deposit box than in a safe at one's residence, but these aren't normal circumstances we're talking about. This is stuff hitting the fan circumstances.
Oct 22, 2010 at 17:06 comment added Eclipse +1 for most of what you're saying, but as an aside, the article about gold is a poorly researched PR-job for Bullion Vault. If the government were to ever force all private citizens to sell their gold to the government, it wouldn't matter if you had it in a safe-deposit box. Hoarding it wouldn't help, as its value lies in being able to sell it.
Oct 20, 2010 at 18:20 comment added James I had the problem of getting a will out of safe deposit box. It took months to go through the procedures.
Oct 20, 2010 at 17:04 comment added myron-semack A fireproof safe in your house doesn't do much good when the house catches on fire and collapses on top of the safe! Most low cost safes are only rated for <1hr of fire protection too. How long will your house burn before the fire is out?
Oct 14, 2010 at 17:54 comment added Matthew Jones I have a fireproof safe, and I keep thinking that thieves could just walk off with it. I'm waiting for my local bank to get some safe deposit boxes available.
