Mar 2, 2021 at 4:40 comment added user102008 Note that whether your parents actually claim you on their tax return has no bearing on whether you are required to file, and also has no bearing on whether you are eligible for various tax credits. As long as you meet the conditions to be your parent's dependent, you are treated as a dependent for tax purposes no matter if your parents actually claim you or not.
Mar 1, 2021 at 12:59 comment added Ben Miller @DoctorReality If you are not required to file and you would not be getting a refund if you did file, then there is no reason to file. But if you look at your pay statement and see that they are taking money out for federal or state income tax, then filing might get you some or all of that money back as a refund. Also, there are some tax credits that are called “refundable” tax credits, which means that you can take advantage of them even if you don’t owe any taxes.
