Received the following error message. The only thing I can see on my return is that the "foreign country name" on 1040, page 1, is not grayed-out but has no country name listed. (I haven't been able to get it grayed-out again. All suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

The error message seems to be talking about a state abbreviation (presumably things like NY for New York etc.), not a foreign country. I'd start looking at anywhere where you've entered your state. – TripeHound May 4 '18 at 11:22
  • Agree with @TripeHound. In your address at the top of 1040, what do you currently have for State? – Ben Miller May 4 '18 at 12:30
  • Thank you, TripleHound and Ben Miller. I have NJ entered everywhere it calls for ST. I'm thinking that because originally I had an overseas address, changed the Foreign Country field and then deleted it, it created the problem. The Foreign Country field is now blank although not a gray, never-filled-in blank and I can't retrieve the gray blank. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. (I live in a country where I don't trust the mail system, so hesitate to mail in my return.) – dvoradvash May 5 '18 at 17:57
