Some couples choose to split one of their CPP or QPP payments as a way to balance their income and reduce their household’s overall tax bill. This has no impact on the surviving spouse’s benefits. If one spouse dies, the survivor benefits are calculated as if the splitting (officially called assigning) of benefits never took place.
