May 15, 2018 at 21:10 | comment | added | cHao | @blm: £50 is basically gambling money; most people will treat it as such, and won't lose any sleep even if it drops to 0. It's all a game til there's a significant amount of money at stake. That's when they find out how much risk they're really OK with. :)

If your £50 dropping to £25 keeps you up at night and gives you ulcers, that tells you a lot about your risk tolerance and that you'll be a blithering mess if instead of £50 at risk it was £5000. On the other hand, maybe you'll find out it doesn't really bother you and you may be able to tolerate higher risk investments. Of course too much risk tolerance isn't necessarily a good thing either.

I'm not disagreeing with you; you're entirely right. I'm just pointing out the absurdity of preventing people from high-risk investments because of the "high risk" part, then turning around and providing a way to automatically buy lottery tickets.
May 14, 2018 at 14:42 | comment | added | cHao | @Benubird: In the long term, and with the right mindset, yes. The thing is, though, a lottery ticket doesn't require anything more of you than that you be willing to buy it. High-risk investments require that you be contrarian. You have to be willing to get in and stay in when everyone else is getting out. If you aren't up to that, you're almost certain to lose money.
May 14, 2018 at 13:56 | comment | added | Benubird | I recently found out you can set up a direct debit to automatically buy lottery tickets, for those who are being refused access to high risk investment options. I don't know the exact numbers, but... I have to wonder if those "high risk" investments might not be a little less risky.
