Best way to start investing, for a young person just starting their career? Thanks for the heads up. I updated my answer to link to the new edition. |

Does it make any sense to directly contribute to reducing the US national debt? I think the terms "debt" and "deficit" are getting confused here. Even if the Bush Tax Cuts expired, and the CBO projections held true, there would still be $trillions of debt outstanding. It would take decades before the US became debt free. |

In general, is it financially better to buy or to rent a house? If you rent, you still pay for home upkeep and repair. It is just hidden from you. Your landlord is trying to make a profit from the lease income. If your landlord is losing money on the home repairs, expect your rent to go up. |

Are you allowed to have both a 401(k) and a SIMPLE IRA? If so, what about limits? I realize this has been closed for a while, but the IRS updated their web site some time after my answer, and confirmed that yes, what I said was correct. If the U.S. defaults on its debt, what will happen to my bank money? All I'm saying is that the US Treasury not paying a bill is unrelated to my ability to withdraw funds from my local bank. |

If the U.S. defaults on its debt, what will happen to my bank money? It's worth pointing out that a default also doesn't neceassarily mean the Federal Govt will stop paying interest on our bonds. It means they will have to avoid/delay paying certain obligations. Most "what if we default" proposals say we will pay our Military Payroll and bondholders first, then look at skipping some of our other bills (e.g. social programs). |
