Personal Finance & Money Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for people who want to be financially literate. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I track my spending in Buddi, but it doesn't help me forecast my imminent cash needs, e.g. to pay off bills. Is there a good software application that lets me do this? It would have to have at least the following features:

  • multiple accounts
  • one-off transactions that I enter as necessary
  • recurring transactions (weekly, fortnightly, monthly on a specific date)
  • shows the balance of each account over time

Ideally I'd like something web-based so that I can check it from work, home, etc. I'd also like something that's either free or has no ongoing costs (happy to pay an initial purchase price for something that meets my needs).

I use MS excel... I also have Quickbooks for business.

Nice and simple is docs.google.com spreadsheets.. The whole idea is go record your monthly activity and become familiar with it... You don't have to be fancy or use expensive tools to do that.

For those who are not yet comfortable with providing your financial information to a web app, I've found Quickbooks/Quicken to be very useful. You can set up recurring bills and income on certain dates, and get reports on your projected cash flow broken down by account, vendor, spending category, etc. tied back to projected account balances. – JAGAnalyst Apr 30 at 21:32

SimplyBudgets have the best product I have seen for personal cashflow forecasting; however, it's still tied to Windows. http://www.simplybudgets.com.au

Another good product is PocketSmith, which is an online app http://www.pocketsmith.com/

PocketSmith looks good; I've signed up and will give it a go. – Andrew Swan Jul 29 '11 at 6:08
PocketSmith is exactly what I was looking for! – Sean W. Jan 26 '12 at 18:09

An excellent-looking site, but unfortunately doesn't seem to support any ZIP codes or banks outside the US yet (I'm an Aussie). I've asked them to add my banks. – Andrew Swan Jan 9 '10 at 23:08

I just created a web app to do this. It only supports one account, but has all the other features you're looking for. You don't even need to sign up to use it.

You can try www.paytraq.com - a tool which lets you manage your cashflow effectively and easily.

Moderator's Note: Oleg is affiliated with the site he is mentioning.

I was hoping for a free tool, or at least one with no ongoing costs. I'll update the question. – Andrew Swan Oct 25 '12 at 22:53
