I'm looking for a web 2.0 type site that offers an easy way to get good term life insurance quotes without dealing with the plethora of scammy-type sites out there.

I could go to each individual insurer and do it there, but I'm thinking there's probably a new startup that does this (or maybe mint.com does?)

I believe you are from New York. NYS law is very strict when it comes to insurance -- only brokers can solicit or quote insurance policies in the state. – duffbeer703 Oct 12 '11 at 1:49
I understand not wanting scammy sites, but what is wrong with a broker? I don't know what the incentive would be for a site or person to do this unless they were a broker? – MrChrister♦ Nov 8 '11 at 21:56

If you decide to get term life insurance, the best way to buy is by checking one of several websites for a financially strong company that offers low premiums. AMBest.com is a good site for research purposes. Look for insurers that have an A++ or an A+ rating. (Free registration is required to use this site.)

These things are regulated in the US so it makes it difficult if not impossible for an outside party to come in and make a site like you are suggesting. In theory it protects you from scammers who want to take advantage of you. In practice it keeps the market closed except to those with a big bankroll to buy in. So you end up with broker sites masquerading as comparison sites.

There are reliable life insurance quoting services and online brokerage firms – look for one that has the BBB seal and holds a good reputation. Check whether they are well spoken of by financial media such as Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Inc 5000, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal as well as financial personalities such as Suze Orman.
